Vegetable-tanned leather from Germany & Tuscany

PURE ECO LEATHER
NATURALLY BEAUTIFUL - VEGETABLE TANNING
Natural extracts from fruits, woods, leaves, and bark, such as tara fruit, oak, or valonia, are used as tanning agents. Vegetable tanning is one of the oldest, traditional methods of leather tanning and, unlike the widely used chrome tanning, offers many qualitative, ecological, and health advantages:
- Incomparably soft leather feel
- Unique colors and brilliance
- Gentle leather scent, free of chemicals
- Optimal skin compatibility, as no chromium molecules are used in the tanning process that could later enter the skin through sweat and potentially trigger allergies. Our leather is suitable for allergy sufferers, free of heavy metals, and chrome-free.
- High breathability due to the open-pore surface of the leather, which is not sealed with plastics. This guarantees the beautiful, individual
patina that our leather develops with time and use. - Factors that are harmful to the environment and humans, such as chromium residues and pollutants in leather and wastewater, are largely avoided.
WHY ARE THERE SO FEW PRODUCTS MADE FROM VEGETABLE-TANNED LEATHER?
Due to the high labor and cost intensity of vegetable tanning compared to chrome tanning, and because fashion is so fast-paced and a handbag, leather jacket, or shoes therefore cannot cost much, vegetable-tanned leather is unfortunately very rare and difficult to obtain today.
We are firmly convinced that a beautiful accessory or piece of clothing made of leather is still something very precious: something that accompanies us for many years, gives us security and well-being on the go, acquires its distinctive character in the form of a beautiful patina with time and use – and something we often wear directly on our skin. That is why we decided from the very beginning to consistently use eco-leather.
WE SOURCE THE FINE, TRADITIONALLY VEGETABLE-TANNED LEATHERS FOR OUR PRODUCTS FROM SELECTED TANNERIES IN GERMANY AND ITALY:

"THE SOUL OF A SHOE"
JOH. RENDENBACH, TRIER
We are particularly proud of our collaboration with the Johann Rendenbach tannery in our hometown of Trier, whose high-quality heels and leather soles we use for our boots and shoes. Since 1871, the traditional Rendenbach company – now in its 4th generation – has been consistently producing its leather using the traditional oak bark pit tanning process. Durable and long-lasting, especially skin-friendly, flexible and breathable – for maximum wearing comfort.

EXCLUSIVE LEATHER FROM ORGANIC SALMON
NANAI SALMON LEATHER, BAVARIA
This exceptional luxury leather is manufactured in Bischofsmais, Bavaria, the world's only salmon leather tannery. Inspired by the ancient traditions of the Nanai, an indigenous people living on the Amur River in Eastern Siberia who practice salmon tanning, founder Holger Hain has perfected the chemical-free tanning of fish skins. The salmon skins are tanned using purely vegetable-based methods and are 100% chrome-free. The skins come from certified Irish organic salmon farms with animal-friendly husbandry and are a by-product of the food industry.

CERTIFIED GENUINE LEATHER
ECOPELL, SOUTHERN GERMANY
Our glove-soft cow nappa and fine lining leather is sourced from Ecopell in Southern Germany. The family business Schomisch has been tanning Ecopell leather for 30 years using plant extracts. This reduces environmental problems during the production and disposal of the leather. Predominantly used tanning agents from renewable plant parts conserve the tanning plant populations. Only heavy metal-free dyes are used for colouring. Ecopell was the first German supplier to be awarded the ECARF quality seal and the IVN natural leather certificate and meets the highest requirements for occupational and environmental protection measures.
