Less is more!
Thanks to gentle vegetable tanning, our leather has retained its natural properties. Due to this quality, it generally requires less care than conventional leather. Our leather is vegetable-tanned using an elaborate process and then hand-greased. Chemical treatments such as the application of lacquers, plastics, or dyes have been consistently avoided. Natural marks in the leather such as scars, horn thrusts, or scratches are therefore not flaws, but rather a guarantee of consistently natural leather.
Due to the gentle treatment and greasing of the leather, it is already highly impregnated and protected against moisture. Please do not use commercially available impregnating agents, as these can harm the leather. They often contain silicones, which can glue the open-pored surface of the leather, thus impairing its breathability.
In case of heavy wetness, simply dry it with a soft cloth and then allow the leather to air dry at room temperature. Never dry the leather on or in the immediate vicinity of a heater.
Coarse dirt can be brushed off and/or wiped with a damp cloth. Superficial scratches or dirt marks can be polished out with a soft cloth. With time and use, our leather will develop an individual and beautiful patina. Environmental influences such as sun, rain, and humidity will cause the leather to darken slightly.
Rain spots or dark spots due to moisture
Especially with light leather colors, moisture or rain can lead to so-called "spots". With time and use, these will consolidate into a patina that protects the leather. If you don't want to wait for this, take a damp, soft cloth and polish the dark spot evenly over the entire leather with light pressure. Due to the moisture, the leather will initially darken but will lighten again as it dries.
Shoes and Boots
Please note our care instructions in the respective item description for shoes and boots. In general, we recommend – used very sparingly – Tapir and Barth leather care cream. Apply it sparingly to the leather with a soft cotton cloth; the original shine will be restored with a soft horsehair brush or a soft cotton cloth. Dirt can be simply removed with a damp cloth.
Bags
Smooth Leather Handbags
Our recommendation: Do not use any care products or impregnations and allow the leather to age beautifully and develop a patina. This way your bag will remain most beautiful. If, after a long time and use, you run your hand over the leather and feel that it is rough or dry, apply – as sparingly as you would apply a skin cream
– beeswax care or leather grease.
Bags made of ecopell antique leather or suede
Please do not use any care cream or impregnating spray on this leather. You can carefully "erase" dirt spots with a suede rubber brush. Alternatively, you can carefully try to remove dirt with a suede eraser.
Special Warning
Light Leather Colors and Jeans
Unfortunately, jeans – even if they have been washed frequently – are not colorfast and lose blue dye. You may already be familiar with this problem from blue-stained sofas or leather car seats.
If you wear blue jeans, please be careful not to carry light-colored leather bags at leg height, i.e., so that the bag rubs against the jeans. Otherwise, the leather may take on blue color that is difficult or impossible to remove.
